What's Good To Eat At The Open?
The U.S. Open is a week away, but before the spectators take their seats and the first ball is served in Flushing, the menu to feed tennis fans needs to be set.
CBS 2's Tony Tantillo got a preview of what's good to eat at the Open, where nearly 700,000 people will be present– and will likely be hungry for more than just great tennis.
This year's menu will feature more creative dishes, top notch chefs and tons of variety.
Michael Lockard, the Executive Chef at the Open, said he's added many different dishes this year.
"What we're seeing today is like 12 dishes, and we didn't do everything," he said. "So I want to say, at least 30 dishes."
There are plenty of stars on the tennis courts, and when it comes to the plates, Tantillo says there's plenty of stars on those, as well.
The pork sliders got a great review, as did the chowder and the California BLTs with avocado.
The lobster rolls are also a standout, and this year they have a club version as well.
And there is no shortage of selection! Tantillo sampled his way though custom ground burgers, baked clams and a new crab cake recipe, which he called "fantastic."
"People expect that we compare ourselves to other New York restaurants and that's the level that we want to operate at," Lockard said. "But it's also international."
So those at the Open will be able to find a variety of palettes, including world class sushi.
"We don't look at this just as a sporting event," Lockard said. "I always joke that this is a good event, and they play tennis, too."
