WFAN's Mike Francesa Among 'Most Powerful People' In NY Sports
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- He'll get you the sports any way that he can!
We're talking about WFAN host Mike Francesa, whose popular afternoon drive show has earned him the No. 8 spot on the Daily News' list of the "50 Most Powerful People in New York Sports."
The Daily News said it polled its writers, editors and "authorities from around the country" on the heavy hitters who have the biggest economic, political and social impact on sports in the Big Apple.
James Dolan, owner of the Knicks and Rangers -- and the big boss at Madison Square Garden -- took home the top spot. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell was second, followed by soon-to-be-retired Yankees captain Derek Jeter. Giants co-owner John Mara and Yankees co-chairman Hal Steinbrenner rounded out the top five. As for Francesa, the Daily News said his "influence on the New York sports landscape is undeniable."
"He remains New York sports talk radio's marquee player and No. 1 lightning rod," the paper wrote.
Francesa, who has been a powerhouse on WFAN for more than 25 years, signed a multi-year contract extension in 2013.
The station had a few other names make the list: operations manager Mark Chernoff (35), Yankees radio voice Suzyn Waldman (40) and "Boomer & Carton" co-host Boomer Esiason (41).
