Westchester Man Gets Prison For Killing Wife
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (CBS 2/AP) -- Was he taking her out of her misery - or was it simply cold blooded murder?
A 78-year-old man who said he killed his wife because he didn't want to put her in a nursing home will spend eight years in prison.
Paul Weinstein used a World War II era handgun to shoot his wife as she lay in bed last September at a senior apartment complex in New Rochelle, N.Y.
He called 911 to say that he'd done it, and that he intended to shoot himself as well.
He told police that his wife, Helena, was "starting to lose it" and was suffering. But he also said later that they had argued.
The former pharmacist pleaded guilty last month to first-degree manslaughter.
Westchester County District Attorney Janet DiFiore said in a statement Wednesday: "No one has the right to take another's life."
