The Hastings-on-Hudson resident and LitWorld executive director says their mission is simple - spread literacy.

"Our belief is that literacy is a sort of fundamental human right that underlies all other rights," she says. "And we're going to do teacher trainings. We're going to do children's writing workshops while we're there."

Allyn will be in Kenya for two weeks.

LitWorld has partnered with a group there to teach orphans of HIV and AIDS about the power of literacy.

"This is one of the sites that LitWorld has been working in from the beginning, to cultivate a real strong reading and writing culture in the most vulnerable places on Earth," she says. "Because we do feel that when people have literacy, number one, nobody can take it away from you and number two, it's a real tool to use to lift yourself out of poverty, to protect yourself."

Allyn says the power of literacy should never be underestimated.
