Boil Water Advisory In Effect For Parts Of Westchester
An early-morning spot check of several delis and coffee shops in New Rochelle revealed many weren't aware of the advisory, WCBS 880's Sean Adams reported.
At Bagels And Deli in the Quaker Ridge Plaza, Mike Mariano was making adjustments.
"I'm gonna break out the Poland Springs to make the coffee and hopefully my guy will be finished making the bagels for tomorrow before 10 o'clock," Mariano told Adams.
Residents are being told to boil water for one minute before drinking, preparing food, washing dishes and brushing teeth. Bottled water can be used as an alternative.
All food service establishments in the affected area must also boil water before serving it or using it to prepare food.
The advisory does not apply to water that is used for washing clothes or bathing.
"We have the boil water advisory out there for a reason because it could be potentially dangerous," Peter DeLucia of the Westchester County Health Department told CBS2's Valerie Castro. "Like anything else, it's going to be more dangerous to someone who is compromised, the elderly or the very young. So you want to take these precautions."
The advisory not only affected the food service industry but also affected a New Rochelle Senior Center where despite the exercise activities planned, the folks were not allowed to drink from the water fountain.
Bottles and jugs of water were brought in and food had to be specially prepared, CBS2's Valerie Castro reports.
The advisory is in effect as the New York City Department of Environmental Protection does maintenance on its chlorination system.
