West Side Highway Shooting Leads To Drug Arrests
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - Two suitcases full of drugs were confiscated and four men were arrested after the wild car chase and shooting on the West Side Highway.
Federal agents opened fire on a suspect they tried to apprehend on the West Side Highway Thursday afternoon. There were no injuries, though the highway was shut down between 42nd Street and 56th Street due to police activity. It was reopened about three and a half hours later.
According to authorities, the incident was the result of a large-scale Drug Enforcement Agency heroin bust that was taking place at 262nd Street and Broadway in the Bronx.
Authorities say DEA agents were following a Jeep Cherokee into Manhattan and stopped him at 47th and 12th, right by the Intrepid Sea Air & Space Museum. The suspect then made sudden movements which the DEA agents said were endangering them and the public. The agents then opened fire.
The suspect, Jamarky Almanzar, was apprehended after strangely returning to the same place DEA agents had been investigating.
Three other men were also arrested at the Bronx apartment.
"They're involved in large scale distributions of heroin throughout the New York City area," the DEA's Tim Foley explained.
Investigators tell CBS2's Valerie Castro they seized tens of thousands of doses of Heroin and Fentanyl on Thursday.
