Dangerously cold weather settles into Tri-State Area as Christmas and Hanukkah approach
NEW YORK -- It's cold, cold, cold! So cold, in fact, that Monday is a First Alert Weather Day due to very low temperatures and dangerous wind chills, especially at night.
Monday's forecast
An impressive arctic airmass continues to maintain its grip on the region. This has led to the coldest temperature the city has seen for all of 2024 and throughout all of last winter, as the mercury dipped to 15 degrees on Sunday morning.
Temps on Monday will nudge up slightly, reaching the mid to upper 20s for highs, with ample sunshine. Highs will then gradually increase each day during the week, returning to average by Friday.
Looking ahead to Christmas and Hanukkah
As for more snow in the forecast, there is a chance during the morning hours of Tuesday. Snowfall amounts with this system won't be impressive, mainly just a coating to an inch. For those dreaming of a White Christmas, this next round of light snow may be just enough to ensure a White Christmas in many locations, especially when combined with snow still on the ground from Saturday's little storm.
A White Christmas is defined as having an inch or more of snow on the ground on Christmas morning. The last time NYC saw a White Christmas was in 2009. Historically, there is only an 11% chance of a White Christmas in the city. Could 2024 break the 15 yearlong streak of no snow on Christmas? It's certainly possible.
