'We Shall Not Forget': MLB Pauses To Remember 9/11
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Major League Baseball will hold tributes prior to each and every game on Wednesday, 12 years after the 9/11 attacks on the the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.
An American flag patch will be embroidered on the caps of players, coaches, umpires and all other on-field personnel across the league, MLB announced. The Mets will continue their tradition of wearing New York City first responder hats before their game against Washington at Citi Field.
As has been the case in recent seasons, New York will be required to wear its standard caps once the game gets underway.
"All of us within Major League Baseball made a solemn promise after Sept. 11, 2001: We shall not forget," Commissioner Bud Selig said in 2011.
There will be a pregame ceremony and a moment of silence at each home ballpark Wednesday, MLB announced. "We Shall Not Forget" ribbons, special lineup cards and base jewels will also be part of baseball's tribute.
The Mets and Washington Nationals will hold a pregame meet-and-greet for the non-profit organization Tuesday's Children. Also at Citi Field, seedlings from a tree that survived the attacks will be donated to three locations that have recently overcome tragedy (the Rockaways, Prescott, Ariz., and Boston).
On Tuesday, Mets COO Jeff Wilpon and stars David Wright, Matt Harvey and Zack Wheeler met with firefighters at Engine 54, Ladder 4, Battalion 9 in Manhattan, which lost 16 members on 9/11.
"As I've said a million times, it's a shame we only get to celebrate these men and women once a year, and it has to be under these circumstances," Wright said. "I couldn't be more appreciative, and I look forward to this trip every year."
