It was a hot July night in Albany when the vote came.

"An historic vote in the New York Senate tonight," reported CBS News anchor Bill Whitney. "By a four-vote margin, Senators approved a bill making New York the sixth state in the county to allow same-sex marriage."

The bill was signed that same hot night by Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

"We want equality in society, equality in our relationships, equality in our love," he said.

"More pride than usual at the Gay Pride Parade," reported CBS News anchor Jim Taylor at the time.

New York City Council speaker Christine Quinn said she can't wait to marry her longtime partner.

"We'll get to talk about when our wedding will be and what it will look like," she said at the time. It will be in the spring of 2012.

New York Archbishop Timothy Dolan said he worries that both marriage and the family will be undermined.
