NEW YORK (WCBS 880) - As we at WCBS Newsradio 880 count down the top 11 Tri-State Area news stories of 2011, we move on to number 6 and the anniversary of an event that changed our world.

So many people said that 9/11 seemed so much more vivid this year.

Maybe it was because this ten-year anniversary gave us permission to share our stories, and each of us has them.
"And I remember it was time to do traffic and weather, we something from the newsroom on the intercom [that] there's something going on downtown, and I tossed it to Tom Kaminski," recalled WCBS 880 morning drive co-anchor Pat Carroll.
"Alright, Pat, we are just currently getting a look at the World Trade Center. We have something that has happened here," reported Tom Kaminski in Chopper 880 on Tuesday, September 11, 2011.
"When the second plane hit, I remember the assistant news director coming, tapping on the TV screens like 'Jeff! Why aren't you saying this on the air?! Look!' and I couldn't fathom that there was a second plane," recalled former WCBS 880 morning drive co-anchor Jeff Caplan.
"My heart had sunk. You know, you're looking at these people and you realize there's nothing you can do for them," recalled former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani.
"I can remember when this place was attacked. It ended up a huge pile of smoking rubble. Then it was a rescue site and then a recovery site and then an empty pit, and what we're looking at now here is just extraordinary," reported WCBS 880's Rich Lamb on Sunday, September 11, 2011.
"To be here now, standing on this six-acre area with 225 trees with the names of the victims around these largest man-made waterfalls in the country, it's just an absolute transformation," said 9/11 Memorial president Joe Daniels.
The neighborhood never looked stronger with the gleaming new World Trade Center being built.
Today, the steel of One World Trade Center reaching 92 floors, still rising with the glass skin reaching the 69th floor.
We can see, after a decade of indecision and doubt, New York's new centerpiece is rising.
