On August 23 at 1:51 p.m. something happened in the New York City area that almost never happens.
"We just had an earthquake!" exclaimed one woman.
"Yeah, Pat [Farnack], I'm rushing in here because we just felt the whole building shake. We believe, we don't know, it's not confirmed. We believe that there is an earthquake. We don't know how else to explain it. Alex Silverman, you've been looking on Twitter, what do you see?" said WCBS 880 anchor Wayne Cabot (who is not usually heard on the air until 3 p.m.).
"It appears tweets from as far south as Virginia, as far west as New Jersey. I'm seeing people are insisting that they have felt an earthquake," replied WCBS 880 anchor/reporter Alex Silverman.
"Let me jump in, Alex, the Pentagon now being evacuated. We are just now told the Pentagon being evacuated," said Cabot.
"Down here at City Hall, they evacuated," reported WCBS 880's Rich Lamb.
It was a magnitude 5.8 earthquake at its epicenter way down in Virginia.
"My first thought is Dominique Strauss-Kahn walks and the earth shakes," reported WCBS 880's Irene Cornell.
Many scientists agree this area is due for a moderate quake, strong enough to damage buildings. This was not that.
