NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - It's been a violent month, both here in New York and across the country, and that's how we begin our July Audiofile of the big stories these past 31 days.

Several children were shot, and one was killed, in New York City.
"It isn't unusual if people are shooting on the streets and they're shooting in parks. That's where you find kids," Mayor Michael Bloomberg said.
A member of the NYPD was also shot.
"A bullet stuck officer Officer [Brian] Groves' bullet-resistant vest, which kept him alive and will allow him to see his little girls again," said the mayor at the time.
WCBS 880's Sean Adams reported that Police Commissioner Ray Kelly held held up the bullet mark over the heart.
"He would have almost certainly been killed," Kelly said.
There was also the horrific and deadly shooting during the midnight screening of "The Dark Knight Rises" in Aurora, Colorado.
12 people were killed and 58 others were injured.
"It's not stopping people from coming here," reported WCBS 880's Marla Diamond outside the AMC Lincoln Square that Friday. "All the IMAX shows are sold out for today."
"Contract talks between Con Ed and its union workers break down, locking out roughly 8,500 workers," reported WCBS 880's Monica Miller.
But then, after WCBS 880's Rich Lamb reported the two sides were personally called together by Gov. Andrew Cuomo, the lockout was ended.
"Sometimes a storm has a silver lining," said Cuomo.
Speaking of Cuomo, his ex-wife, Kerry Kennedy, was arrested in Westchester County and charged with driving while under the influence of drugs.
"This accident was caused not by a sleeping aid, but by a complex partial seizure," Kennedy told reporters. Ambien was found in her blood.
A taxi fare hike was approved.
A boating trip turned tragic on the Long Island Sound when a 34-foot-long boat capsized, killing three people.
Ann Pettway was sentenced to 12 years in prison for snatching 19-day-old Carlina White from Harlem Hospital's emergency room in 1987 and raising her as her own.
Andy Griffith was among those who left us in July.
On Friday, July 27, the London Olympics were opened in a ceremony directed by Oscar-winner Danny Boyle.
