Official: U.S. Warplanes Strike ISIS Camp In Libya

WASHINGTON (CBSNewYork/AP) — A US official says American warplanes struck multiple targets in Libya overnight, hitting what the official described as an Islamic State training camp and a senior extremist leader.

The New York Times reports the attacks occurred around 3:30 a.m. Friday morning, and were targeted towards a camp in Sabratha. According to the New York Times, the attack killed around 30 Islamic State recruits at the site.

Officials say at least 60 militants were at the camp at the time of the airstrike -- including a senior extremist leader, CBS2 reports.

Last week, President Barack Obama directed his national security team to bolster efforts in Libya.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss an operation that has not been publicly announced.
