N.J. Waitress Lands $1,200 Tip On $20 Bill
WOODBRIDGE, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- It wasn't a $758 million lottery win, but an unexpected boon found its way to a waitress in New Jersey thanks to the kindness and generosity of a pair of diners.
As CBS2's Meg Baker reported, Brianna Siegel, 21, could not stop smiling as she told her fellow waitress at Bar Louie in Woodbridge about a table she waited on Tuesday.
"I didn't know if it was real if it was a scam," she said.
Siegel served a couple in their 20s who came in for happy hour and satin her section.
"They turned to me and said, 'Do you believe in God?'" she said.
The couple paid their $20 bill, and handed Siegel an envelope with the request she not to open it until getting home.
Siegel forgot about it until she got to her boyfriend's house. She thought it might be a prayer card because the couple seemed very religious.
But then, she opened it and read the note.
She said she nearly fell on her knees when she found a check made out to her for $1,200. The waitress said the couple included a note that said in part, "Whenever it gets hard, know God got you."
"I really had no words, I didn't know what to say," Siegel said.
Siegel said the couple ordered two burgers and two drinks.
Siegel says she plans to use the money toward nursing school and a new car.
