Volunteers Turn Out To Beautify Schools For New York Cares Day
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Six thousand volunteers turned out Saturday morning to paint, plant and sort books at schools in all five boroughs as part of New York Cares Day.
WCBS 880's Sophia Hall reported that at the Growing Up Green Charter School, on 39-27 28th St. in Long Island City, over 50 volunteers were hard at work.

"We're painting the wall," volunteer Geanna Matz told Hall. "It's a mural that I think a kid drew, and then an artist recreated on the wall, so we're going to paint it and make it colorful."
Volunteers also worked on fixing the fence, reorganizing the library and planting bulbs for the spring at the school.
New York Cares director Meg Maloney said the one-day event makes a big difference.
"The school looks brighter, nicer, cleaner again. It's all those little things that the really dedicated school staff doesn't have time to do," Maloney said, "but it also sends a message to the school community that we care about you."
All over the five boroughs, volunteers provided services to 90 different public schools.
