Video: Police Say Rikers Inmate Received Contraband In Child's Diaper
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - Department of Correction officials on Wednesday were looking into a case where a woman appeared to slip contraband into the diaper of a child, who was then passed to an inmate at Rikers Island prison.
Surveillance video from a visitation room in April shows the woman holding a toddler at a divided table before reaching down and placing something into the diaper.
After passing the child over the table to a male inmate, the man appears to remove something and place it inside his clothes. Moments later security guards are seen entering and separating the couple while a K-9 dog is brought into the room.
"Over the last few years, we have been making great strides when it comes to stopping the flow of contraband into our jails," said DOC Press Secretary Jason Kersten. "We have seen that what works best is a multilayered approach. Canine units, cameras, scanners, and of course human intelligence all create a web that is increasingly catching more contraband, and that is only good when it comes to safety."
Sources tell CBS2 the contraband was narcotics.
According to the DOC, seizures of contraband during visits have gone up by more than 500% since 2014. New security upgrades include more K9s teams, an amnesty contraband program and searching buses that bring in visitors after the visitors have left.
