The plane crashed into the Queens Community of Belle Harbor in the Rockaways moments after taking off from Kennedy Airport on this day in 2001, two months after the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center in Manhattan.
All 260 passengers and crew on board the jet, as well as five people on the ground, were killed.
The names of the victims were read aloud in a solemn ceremony Friday held at the memorial at Beach 116th Street and ocean Promenade in Queens.
One woman, who lost her brother on the flight, says after nine years many families don't believe the pilot caused the crash -- which is what the NTSB determined.
"We believe that there was something behind that, but there's no way that we can prove that," she said.
