Police: California Man Wanted In Long Island Murder
VALLEY STREAM, N.Y. (CBSNEwYork) -- A California man wanted in connection with a murder on Long Island should be considered "armed and dangerous," police said.
Officers responding to a 911 call just before 7 a.m. Friday found a 34-year-old man with multiple gunshot wounds in a second-floor bedroom of a house on East Hawthorne Avenue in Valley Stream.
The scene is not far from the Valley Stream train station on Sunrise Highway.
The victim had been shot with a semi-automatic weapon, Nassau County Detective Lt. Richard LeBrun said. The victim was rushed to South Nassau Community Hospital, but later died.
Police have identified the suspect in the homicide as Deon Ewers, 50, of Los Angeles.
"Now we're not safe, or our children, here in the community – in the village here in Valley Stream," said neighbor Latifah Wright.
As TV 10/55 Long Island Bureau Chief Richard Rose reported Friday night, Valley Stream neighbors were living in fear knowing the suspected killer was on the loose.
Police believe Ewers, who moved to California a year ago, came back to Long Island to murder his ex-wife's new boyfriend.
"He fled out of the residence on foot," Ewers said. "After that is still under investigation. We don't have any video. We don't have any witnesses at this time."
Ewers' estranged wife and their 14-year-old son were inside the home when shots rang out, police said. They were not hurt.
"He is considered armed and dangerous, and the public should not have any interaction with him at all," LeBrun said.
The advice from police had neighbors on edge.
"I guess I'm going to be driving in the car a little more instead of walking my daughter from home from school," Wright said, "because it's just not safe."
"I just hope and pray that they can find this person quickly and that it can be resolved," said neighbor Christine Pagan.
Police late Friday were checking airports, bus and train terminals to see if Ewers tried to head back to California. Police there were also on alert.
