Upper West Side Resident Sues NYPL For $5.5M Over Body Odor Toss

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - An Upper West Side war veteran thinks being asked to leave the library stinks, and he is suing to prove it.

George Stillman, 80, told The New York Post that he had been going to the St. Agnes branch of the New York Public Library on Amsterdam Avenue for the past 20 years without incident.

That was until a few years ago when Stillman said a branch manager asked him to leave due to his body odor.

Stillman told The Post the stench was coming from the bathroom -- not him -- and that no one has ever told him he smells.

"The only time I had an odor was when I was doing long-distance running and I was sweating," Stillman told a Post reporter. "I've got no body odor."

Saying it is not about body odor but about standing up for your rights, Stillman has filed  a $5.5 million lawsuit against the library.

Stillman reportedly prompted a lot of complaints from fellow library patrons, according to a library spokesperson.

He was not banned from the library and has been back several times without incident, the spokesperson told the Post.
