Police: Man Shot By Cops After Holding Mother At Knifepoint On Upper East Side

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A domestic dispute inside an apartment ended in a police-involved shooting Monday afternoon on the Upper East Side.

The shooting erupted after a NYPD officer arrived on the scene on East 65th Street, near 1st Avenue, just before 3 p.m.

A 22-year-old man -- identified by WCBS 880's Marla Diamond as Edgar Soto -- was holding his 59-year-old mother at knifepoint, which prompted his sister to call police, 1010 WINS' Sonia Rincon reported.

Police said they tried to subdue the man several times with a Taser gun, but authorities said it had no effect on him.  The son was overheard saying "shooting me," 1010 WINS' Rincon reported.

Police eventually did shoot Soto, striking him three times in the torso.  They also accidentally shot the mother once in the buttocks as she was trying to get away from her son.

Neighbors said they've heard fighting coming from the apartment before.

"Very heightened emotion...lots of anger between a male voice and a female voice. Just loud," one neighbor said.

It's not clear what sparked the argument.

The man was taken to the hospital, reportedly in stable condition. Both are expected to survive and charges are pending.
