MLB Owners Brush Off Report Of Potential A-Rod Lawsuit
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Team owners don't seem too concerned about a TMZ report that said Alex Rodriguez plans to sue Major League Baseball if his suspension isn't completely lifted.
The report "was greeted with both skepticism and bemusement" at Wednesday's quarterly owners meetings, according to the New York Daily News.
"He's suing us now?" an unnamed owner told the paper. "That's interesting. Good luck to him."
"I guess he's chosen to ignore 100 years of history," an anonymous team executive said, apparently referring to the league's record of fighting off lawsuits.
The Yankees third baseman is currently appealing a 211-game suspension for his alleged ties to Biogenesis, the closed Florida anti-aging clinic accused of distributing PEDs. Twelve other players will serve 50-game bans. Milwaukee Brewers star Ryan Braun previously accepted a 65-game suspension.
TMZ's sources called the investigation of A-Rod "abusive and borderline illegal" and said MLB has "no proof" that he allegedly obstructed the Biogenesis probe.
The New York Post reported this week that A-Rod added high-profile criminal defense attorney Joe Tacopina to his legal team.
"Joe is a fighter, and that is what Alex needs right now," a source told the Post. "He has been brought on to reinforce the trial team, there's a possibility this could go all the way to federal court. Joe is known for putting the hammer down, he's going to take on the Yankees and take on MLB."
