Unnamed Bronco On Tebow: 'He's A Good Person, Just Not An NFL Quarterback'
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - Tim Tebow has been a Jet for 12 games, but he's never had much of an opportunity to show the Jets' faithful what he can do.
Since being acquired by Gang Green, Tebow has sat back and watched starter Mark Sanchez underperform and lead the Jets to a losing season.
All this despite the fact that Tebow came off the bench last season and led the Denver Broncos to an AFC West title and an improbable playoff victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers.
And though Jets fans have been calling for Tebow to supplant Sanchez for weeks now -- though those cries have shifted toward Greg McElroy -- not everyone believes that Tebow is the right man for the job.
That includes some of his former teammates in Denver.
"When Tim was here we saw the issues up close," an unnamed Broncos player told CBSSports.com. "The Jets didn't, and now they are seeing the problems, too. I feel really, really bad for Tim. He's a good person, just not an NFL quarterback."
John Elway, the executive vice president of football operations for the Broncos, let Tebow go in the offseason despite his winning ways and signed future Hall of Famer Peyton Manning.
The results from year to year have been noticeable.
Tebow's Broncos went 8-8, while Manning's Broncos, at 9-3, have already clinched the division.
"Of course we're comparing this year to last year," another player said. "This year we won the division with four games left. That's all Peyton Manning. If Tebow was here, we'd still be squeaking out wins, or losing games we shouldn't be losing. The division would be coming down to the last game.
"I've been following Tim in New York and I feel horrible for him. Everyone here, I think, wants the best for him. He's a good guy. But you can't turn Tim into something he's not, and he's not really an NFL quarterback. He's more of a gimmick player."
In 10 games played this season, the 25-year-old has completed six of seven passes for 39 yards and no touchdowns. He's carried the ball 29 times for 87 yards.
"By bringing in Peyton, we can compete with any team in football," one player said. "Peyton is obviously that good. I'm watching Tim and wishing him well, but (I'm) glad I'm here with Peyton."
