Uniondale High School Hosts Forum On Police Interactions
UNIONDALE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Several hundred Uniondale High School students -- many admitting they harbor some fear of cops -- gathered at a forum on policing in America on Wednesday
In response to recent shootings and killings of black men by police, the forum sought to educate students about police behaviors, WCBS 880 Long Island Bureau Chief Mike Xirinachs reported. Many students said they have been unfairly detained by police.
Panelists advised students on the need for understanding police and that respect is a two-way street.

Teacher Adeola Williams organized the event.
"We are not perfect as human beings," she said. "However, we are trained professionals, and 90 percent of the time we need to be professionals, and we need to treat people with respect."
One student at the forum, Jonathan Dossows, spoke about his goal to become a cop. The 17-year-old said recent police-involved killings are evidence that law enforcement needs more people of color.
"I wanted to help the community and protect people," Dossows said. "They're here to serve and protect, and that's their motto."
