Union Leaders Meet To Discuss Possible Strike At Stop & Shop Stores
MOUNT KISCO, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Union leaders at Stop & Shop stores were holding meetings with membership Sunday evening, as they discuss the possibility of a strike or work stoppage.
The United Food and Commercial Workers Local 1500 was holding contract meetings were in Mount Kisco and Uniondale, Long Island. On Twitter, the union described the meetings as "packed," as it claimed Stop & Shop was raking in "greedy billions in profits but still won't bargain in good faith."
About 6,000 union members have been working without a contract since Nov. 3, including 3,000 at as many as 25 stores on Long Island, according to a Newsday report.
Union members voted to authorize a strike last month, the newspaper reported.
The strike could come right as the Thanksgiving holiday shopping period ramps up, and while union leaders told the newspaper they did not want a strike to inconvenience shoppers during that period, the possibility exists that one could happen.
Stop & Shop, a subsidiary of Dutch supermarket conglomerate Ahold, said in an internal memo last week that replacement workers may be brought in if a strike or work stoppage goes ahead, the paper reported.
