Union City Bank Robbery Foiled When Dye Pack Explodes
UNION CITY, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A would-be robber walked out of a Union City, N.J. bank with thousands of dollars, but authorities said his plans were foiled with a dye pack detonated inside the bag with the money.
The robber entered a crowded TD Bank branch on Bergenline Avenue between 43rd and 44th streets in Union City around 11:45 a.m. Saturday and soon flashed a gun to the teller, Union City police told The Jersey Journal.
After getting an undisclosed amount of cash, the man fled but the dye pack -- disguised as a wad of cash -- went off two blocks from the bank.
The man then dropped the bag containing the money and fled on foot. He remained at large on Sunday, but authorities say several surveillance cameras in the area captured his image as he fled.
The robbery was being investigated by Union City police and the FBI.
Anyone with information was asked to call Union City police at (201) 348-5790, the newspaper reported.
