Unexpected Items Found In Safe Linked To Susan B. Anthony
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Tax documents from 1931 and a building lease from as recently as the 1990s were among the items in a safe linked to Susan B. Anthony in Manhattan Tuesday.
The safe was opened Tuesday in the Manhattan office of the National Council of Women of the United States, an organization Anthony helped found.
Officials at the University of Rochester's Susan B. Anthony Center for Women's Leadership hired a locksmith to open the safe.
The fact that some documents were from the 1990s indicates the safe was opened far more recently than expected.
The safe also contained a box of photographs of suffragist murals that were featured at the Century of Progress Exposition in Chicago in 1932.
Anthony (1820-1906) was a leader of the women's rights movement of the 19th century. She co-founded the first Women's Temperance Movement and the National Woman Suffrage Association along with Elizabeth Cady Stanton.
