Sources: At Least 2 Off-Duty Cops At Scene Of Biker Melee In Washington Heights
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- CBS 2 has learned that at least two off-duty NYPD officers were at the scene of the melee on the West Side involving a motorcycle gang and a family inside an SUV last Sunday.
A law enforcement source has confirmed that the officers were at the scene of the attack on the driver, Alexian Lien.
A source said it is believed neither officer took part in the physical assault on Lien, and are not seen on video. However, one has retained a lawyer and is not commenting.
It was not immediately clear if the officers took part in the chase up the Henry Hudson Parkway that precipitated the attack on Lien.
One of the officers, an undercover narcotics detective, informed officials that he was at the scene at the time of the incident.
NYPD Internal Affairs is investigating, WCBS 880 reported.
Investigators are looking for about six other bikers who may have had a part in attacking the driver of the SUV.
Earlier Friday, the family of Edwin Mieses, the motorcyclist run over by the SUV, said he was just an innocent bystander. The family has hired high-profile attorney Gloria Allred, who held a press conference Friday.
Mieses has two broken legs, an injured spine and may be paralyzed.
