Poll: Most New Yorkers Surveyed Prefer Uber To Yellow Taxis
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- There's some good news for Uber.
A survey of 200 New Yorkers conducted for a taxi medallion group found the app-based car service tops yellow taxis.
More than half of those surveyed said Uber has better prices than yellow cabs, CBS2 reported.
Those surveyed also preferred Uber for convenience, ease of payment and pick-up speed.
Poll: Most New Yorkers Surveyed Prefer Uber To Yellow Taxis
When asked what they disliked about yellow taxis, the top two answers were expense and the driving.
One man, named Todd, told 1010 WINS' John Montone he prefers Uber over yellow cabs because "they're more convenient, they're quicker, they're cleaner." He said yellow taxis are dirty and overpriced, and their drivers are rude and have poor hygiene.
"I'm very friendly, myself," said a cab driver, named Gus. "My car is clean, I always wash my car twice a week. It smells nice. I treat people very nicely."
Outside Penn Station, Rich and his friends climbed into a yellow cab and quickly got out, claiming the driver was asking for too much money to take them to Newark Airport.
"I think it's too much, it shouldn't be 80 bucks to go to Newark from here," he said, but added that he won't use Uber anymore because "they scared me in Miami."
Another man, named Chris, said he's a yellow cab fan after having a poor experience with Uber.
"Yellow cabs every day," Chris said. "They're more reliable, on time, every time."
He said when he used an Uber car once to go to Brooklyn, he ended up in New Jersey.
Uber has become a major player in New York City in recent years, with its cars now outnumbering yellow cabs. The company has said it hopes to add another 10,000 drivers in the city this year.
But that plan could hit a roadblock as the City Council considers a bill that would temporarily limit the issuing of new licenses.
But cab driver Boris is not worried, saying, "Yellow cabs never die."
