Two Women Escape Serious Injury When Train Hits Car
RIVER EDGE, N.J. (AP) -- Two elderly women escaped serious injury early Saturday when their car entered a railroad crossing and was struck by a New Jersey Transit train in north Jersey.
NJ Transit spokesman Dan Stessel says the crossing's safety gates were down and its flashing bells and lights were working when the accident occurred around 7:35 a.m. in River Edge. The car apparently broke through a safety gate and was struck in the rear passenger side by the westbound train, which was carrying 30 passengers.
The driver and her passenger, who are both 77 years old, were taken to Hackensack University Medical Center. They were being treated for injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
No one aboard the Hoboken-bound train was injured. It had departed earlier in the day from Spring Valley, N.Y.
