Two Men Killed In Unrelated Shootings On Long Island

BRENTWOOD, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Police say guests at two parties for teenagers have been killed in unrelated shootings on Long Island this weekend.

Suffolk County police say 27-year-old Douglas Martinez was shot multiple times outside a house party in Brentwood around 10 p.m. Saturday. Then, around 1:30 a.m. Sunday, 18-year-old Rashad Capers was gunned down on a street near a gathering he'd attended in West Babylon.

Police say guests of honor at both parties were 13-year-olds. It's not clear whether the celebrations were for birthdays or other reasons.

No arrests have been made.

Martinez was found in the front yard of a house on Brentwood's Yarnell Street. He lived in Bay Shore.

A source told 1010 WINS reporter Carol D'Auria that Martinez' shooting may have been gang related.

Capers was found lying in Centerwood Street, where he lived. He was shot on nearby St. Johns Place.

Capers' Neighbors expressed shock at the young man's death.

"He's a nice person, we played basketball together. I just felt like it wasn't his time, he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time," said Kanitha Harden.

Capers would have been a senior at North Babylon High School in September.
