Police Investigate Fatal Major Deegan Expressway Crash
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A violent crash just after midnight left one embankment off the Major Deegan Expressway littered with the debris, with four young adults, and a pregnant teenage girl dead.
Family members at the teen's apartment in the Fort George neighborhood are grief-stricken. Daniella Abreu, 16, was due in just two weeks.
"Yes, the baby died too yes," said Ruben Rivera, Abreu's uncle.
The car, a Chrysler 300 sedan, was destroyed when, witnesses say, the 30-year-old driver lost control when changing lanes.
Both men, the driver and his 22-year-old passenger, died at the scene. The rest were taken to St. Barnabas Hospital in critical condition.
Abreu and her baby died Friday morning.
"I feel sad, it's a baby, for me it's like my daughter. It's sad," Rivera told CBS 2's Derricke Dennis.
Investigators say they found no evidence of drinking or other criminality at the scene. Speed does not appear to be a major factor, though other drivers reported the car was flying.
Zobeira Cruz' son, 18-year-old Abel Garcia, was still in the hospital Thursday.
"He's going to be OK. He's alive. He's going to be OK, but there's three people who died in this accident," she said.
Cruz says she believes her son was the father of the unborn child.
Police Commissioner Ray Kelly expressed his condolences to the families of the victims, and says highway investigators will continue their investigation.
