Twitter Account Imagines 'Seinfeld' In Modern NYC With Modern Technology
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The iconic Tom's Restaurant that stood in as the exterior for Monk's Coffee Shop may look much the same, but we all know that New York City has changed dramatically since the days of "Seinfeld."
So what if Jerry, George, Elaine and Kramer were living in the New York City of the 21st century, with its hipsters and trendy shops in Williamsburg, its IKEA in a famously remote location in Red Hook, and its throngs of denizens posting their every thought and move to Facebook, Twitter and Instagram?
You don't have to imagine, because a new Twitter parody account has created that reality.
The "Modern Seinfeld" parody account (@SeinfeldToday) appeared on Sunday night, and despite having issued only 46 tweets, it already had more than 67,000 followers as of Monday evening. The tweets come up with an assortment of imaginary 21st-century plots for the show, which went out of production in 1998.
The tweets imagine the "Seinfeld" characters navigating through contemporary New York City and its trends:
Meanwhile, there is no shortage of name-dropping for social networking sites and apps, of which the modernized Seinfeld characters appear to be very fond:
And the tweets even bring some Seinfeld-style levity to the struggles of Superstorm Sandy:
The Atlantic Wire reported Monday that BuzzFeed sports editor Jack Moore is behind the account. He told the publication they started tweeting out scenarios for fictitious contemporary "Seinfeld" episodes with his friend, Josh Gondelman, and decided the running joke warranted its own account.
There was no published reaction to the new account Monday night from Jerry Seinfeld or co-creator Larry David, but Jason Alexander did retweet a remark from the Huffington Post: "We're pretty confident @SeinfeldToday is gonna be your new favorite Twitter account."
