Twenty-Five Wild Turkeys From Staten Island Headed For Hudson Valley Animal Sanctuary
NEW YORK (AP) -- Some 25 wild turkeys roaming the grounds of a psychiatric facility on Staten Island will be set to an animal sanctuary in New York's Hudson Valley.
The Staten Island Advance reports that the birds will be transported upstate by the same U.S. Department of Agriculture unit that rounded up some of their brethren and sent them to a slaughterhouse last month.
The August turkey roundup at the South Beach Psychiatric Center caused an uproar among animal lovers.
Twenty-five of the remaining birds will go to the Catskill Animal Sanctuary in Saugerties.
Local elected officials worked with the state Department of Environmental Conservation and the New York office of the Humane Society of the United States to broker the turkey deal.
State Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis called the development ``great news.''
