Trump: Sterling Is 'Despicable,' But He Was Set Up By 'Girlfriend From Hell'
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- NBA Commissioner Adam Silver is under pressure from fans and players — both current and former — to come down hard on Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling, who allegedly made racially-charged comments in parts of a taped conversation released this weekend by Deadspin and TMZ.
Donald Trump, who is never shy about speaking his mind, told Fox News on Monday that Sterling's alleged comments were "despicable."
However, the business magnate did say that Sterling was set up by his "very bad girlfriend."
"He got set up by a very, very bad girlfriend -- let's face it," Trump told "Fox & Friends" in regard to then-girlfriend V. Stiviano. "She's called the girlfriend from hell, but what he said was terrible and despicable and very strong action is going to be taken. There's no question about it. She's a terrible human being and he gave horrible answers and disgusting answers."
Trump added that Sterling "seems close to incompetent."
"I think he could be out of it, frankly, based on his actions," Trump told Fox News. "He could be pretty much out of it in terms of his whole mentality."
Hall of Famer and Lakers legend Magic Johnson is reportedly eyeing a purchase of the Clippers amid the Sterling firestorm.
The NBA announced on Monday that it will hold a press conference on Tuesday in regard to its investigation of Sterling. An announcement will be made.
