Trump: Our Leaders Are 'Stupid' For Letting In Too Many Refugees
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The terror attacks in New York City and New Jersey became the focus Monday in the race for president as both Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump talked about tackling terrorism.
However, as CBS2's Dick Brennan reported, the two candidates are proposing different approaches.
Clinton's rally at Temple University in Philadelphia on Monday was planned as an outreach to millennials, but the terror arrest made for a change in focus.
"This is a fast-moving situation and a sobering reminder that we need steady leadership in a dangerous world," Clinton said.
The Democratic presidential nominee spoke hours after bombing suspect Ahmad Khan Rahami was captured in Linden, New Jersey.
Trump blamed the President Barack Obama's administration for letting in too many refugees.
"Thousands of people are pouring into our country. We have no idea what we're doing. Our leaders are – I don't even say weak. I say stupid," Trump said.
Terrorism and immigration are likely to come up when each of the candidates meets Monday night with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi at the United Nations.
Trump took to social media to claim that Clinton has "emboldened terrorists."
"Hillary Clinton's weakness while she was Secretary of State, has emboldened terrorists all over the world to attack the U.S., even on our own soil. They are hoping and praying that Hillary Clinton becomes President - so that they can continue their savagery and murder," Trump said.
Clinton said it's Trump who has no solution for the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria.
"So let's focus on what we really can do. You don't hear a plan from him. He keeps saying he has a secret plan. Well, the secret is he has no plan," Clinton said.
Clinton also branded Trump as a "recruiting sergeant for the terrorists."
A Trump's spokesman responded by saying that Clinton was effectively accusing Trump of treason.
Rahami will be charged with five counts of attempted murder and two gun charges.
