Trump Continues 'Thank You' Tour Following A Whirlwind Tuesday
WEST ALLIS, Wis. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- President-elect Donald Trump continued his "Thank You" tour Tuesday evening.
"My administration will be focused on three very important words," he said before a packed house in West Allis, Wisconsin. "Jobs. Jobs. Jobs."
Earlier in the day, Trump met with a wide swath of celebrities and famous figures, including rap mogul and possible future presidential candidate Kanye West.
"I feel it is important to have a direct line of communication with our future president if we truly want change," West later said in a tweet.
Trump met with West, former NFL linebacker Ray Lewis and NFL icon and civil rights leader Jim Brown, along with longtime Trump backer Omarosa Manigault, at Trump Tower in New York City on Tuesday. West refused to comment with reporters after the meeting, instead saying only "I just want to take a picture right now" as he posed for pictures with Trump.
A few minutes later, West tweeted from his @KanyeWest account that he met with Trump "to discuss multicultural issues" including bullying, education and "violence in Chicago."
Today's meetings in New York came shortly after the President-elect announced he has settled on ExxonMobil chief executive officer Rex Tillerson as his choice for secretary of state, saying that he's "among the most accomplished business leaders and international deal makers in the world."
"Rex Tillerson's career is the embodiment of the American dream. Through hard work, dedication and smart deal making, Rex rose through the ranks to become CEO of ExxonMobil, one of the world's largest and most respected companies," the billionaire real estate mogul said in a predawn news release from Trump Tower in New York.
In an accompanying statement, Tillerson said he was "honored" by his selection and shares Trump's "vision for restoring the credibility of the United States' foreign relations and advancing our country's national security."
Bill Gates also visited to talk tech. He said he and Trump had "a wide ranging conversation about the power of innovation."
Trump on Tuesday also picked former Texas Gov. Rick Perry for energy secretary. In a 2011 debate, Perry said he wanted to do away with the Department of Energy, but also could not seem to remember it.
Trump has three more cabinet positions to fill — Veteran's Affairs, Interior agriculture. He has postponed a news conference that had been scheduled for Thursday to talk about how to handle his business affairs going forward.
That news conference his moved to early January.
