Donald Trump To Hold Fundraising Rally For Chris Christie In New Jersey

LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Donald Trump is going to hold a rally in New Jersey to help Gov. Chris Christie pay off the debt he incurred running for president.

The presumptive Republican presidential nominee's fundraising rally will take place Thursday at the National Guard Armory in Lawrenceville.

COMPLETE CAMPAIGN 2016 COVERAGE

Christie endorsed Trump after the governor suspended his campaign for president and Trump has named Christie to head the transition team if Trump is elected in November.

"Christie has been a loyal supporter and confidant to Mr. Trump and the campaign. He has been entrusted to oversee this important task with the goal to implement this team in an official capacity in November," the Trump campaign said at the time.

As part of his general election planning, Trump is also moving aggressively to identify potential running mates. While he would not provide a full list of names, he did not rule out Christie as a potential candidate.

According to a new Quinnipiac poll, just 18 percent of New Jersey residents think Trump should nominate Christie as his vice presidential nominee. Seventy-two percent of voters believe he should choose someone else, CBS2 reported.

Protesters plan to be outside the fundraiser.

The New Jersey Citizen Action group is organizing a rally across from the armory.
