Troublesome 57th Street Crane Being Taken Down

NEW YORK(CBSNewYork) -- The troublesome crane at One57 on 57th Street is coming down.

Work to lower the boom and all other parts continued on Saturday evening and was expected to go all night long and into the morning.

Crews hoped to have the crane down by 8 a.m. so they could reopen 57th Street which was shutdown between Sixth and Seventh Ave.

The crane is located on top of the same luxury skyscraper where another crane created problems during Superstorm Sandy. That crane nearly plummeted into the street below after being caught by an 80-mph wind gust, The New York Times reported.

Following the storm the new crane was erected. In October 2013, that crane stopped working while hoisting a concrete counterweight weighing 13,500-lbs.

The load was left hanging some 30 stories above the street for hours as crews worked to safely lower it, The Times reported.
