Record-High Temperature Of 98 Degrees Set At John F. Kennedy Airport
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A record-high temperature was set Tuesday at John F. Kennedy Airport. The high hit 98 degrees at 3:42 p.m. That broke the previous record of 94 degrees, which was set in 1993.
The sweltering, humid weather that made stepping out the front door like stepping into a hot, slick sponge kept its hold on the rest of the Tri-State area as well.
Temperatures reached 97 degrees at Newark Liberty Airport Tuesday after and the heat index, which measures what the temperature actually feels like when combined with other factors, went up to 100.
The Tri-State Area is going to have to wait until Wednesday for some measure of relief. A cold front will usher in a northwest wind that will lead to a drop in humidity.
Temperatures will be in the upper 80s Wednesday - still above normal - but it will feel better.

It feels like you are in a desert instead of the suburbs of Long Island said one man who was on his daily walk.
"I have a workout regimen that I do everyday. It's a little more of a challenge today in this type of weather. I got my water bottle, probably going to shorten the duration of time today," he told WCBS 880 reporter Sophia Hall.

For Long Island residents without air conditioning, cooling centers were open in Freeport, Rockville Centre, Oyster Bay, North Hempstead, and Hempstead.
Cooling centers in New York City were also open.
If you don't like air conditioning, you could stop at one of the coolest places in the city -- the water's edge at Herman MacNeil Park in College Point. One man told 1010 WINS' Carol D'Auria that it could be 15 degrees cooler the any other place around.
