Wind Topples Rotting Tree In Newark, No Injuries
NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Steady winds and unfavorable weather conditions caused a tree to come crashing down in Newark Friday morning.
The tree came down on a residential road at around 8:30 a.m, striking one car and landing in the street, CBS2's Ali Bauman reported.
Officials say the tree had been rotting and was hollow in the middle before being knocked over by the wind.
The tree is now resting on power lines, but no outages have been reported, officials say.
The couple who lives in the house in front of where the tree fell are grateful that there was minimal damage -- only a fence was impacted.
"Usually, my wife will be parked right there, but what happened last night, I told her, 'Why don't you pull in the driveway?'" said Henry Davis. "And good thing she did or our car would be gone."
"The tree had been sitting there for years," Katrina Davis, of Newark, said. "We've been here for 10 years and the tree always was kind of leaning. We knew something was going to happen."
No one was hurt in the incident.
PSE&G officials are working to start cleaning up the tree.
