Transformer Explosion Knocks Out Power In Northern N.J.

NORTH BERGEN, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- An estimated 12,000 customers were without power in New Jersey Monday afternoon after a transformer blew up.

As CBS 2's Joe Biermann reported from Chopper 2, the Public Service Enterprise Group reported the customers were without power as of late Monday afternoon. The estimated number ballooned from about 2,400 to about 12,000 early Monday evening.

As of the 8 p.m. hour, power had been restored to most customers.

PSEG reported a transformer that affected customers in Hudson and Bergen counties. The affected customers were in North Bergen Township, Guttenberg, Cliffside Park, Ridgefield, and other surrounding municipalities.

PSEG officials had no information about the cause of the transformer failure. A bright white flash was observed near the scene, indicating an explosion.

PSEG said two substations went "offline" and caused the outages. The organization was seeking to find the reason as of Monday night.

A similar outage was reported last week in the same area.
