New York Weather: Tornado Warning In NYC, School Damaged In New Jersey On Wild Night Across Tri-State

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - A tornado warning was issued in the New York City area Tuesday night.
The warning was centered in the Staten Island area and was lifted at 10:15 p.m.
According to CBS2's Lonnie Quinn, the warning originally was set until 9:30 p.m. but was extended due to the severity of Tuesday's storm.
The severe weather alert followed similar alerts in several New Jersey counties earlier Tuesday night.
Thousands of power outages have also been reported in the three New Jersey counties; including over 3,000 in Morris County, over 6,000 in Sussex County, and another 300 in Warren County.
In Sussex County, a school is closed Wednesday because of significant damage caused by the storm.

About one hundred students, parents, and staff were inside Lenape Valley Regional High School celebrating an end of year athletic banquet when the storm caused at least a dozen trees to fall on and around the building.
"When we got here, lots of rain, high winds, lighting, thunder. Lots of trees down," Alan Bookspan of the Stanhope Fire Department said.
"It happened very very quickly... We sheltered people in place here until we could establish a safe zone outside."
There will be no classes at Lenape Valley on Wednesday as Stanhope officials clean up from the storm.
CBS2's Jessica Layton reported that there was golf ball-sized hail was steadily falling on Staten Island Tuesday night during the extreme weather event.
Local residents on the island also reported seeing funnel clouds forming in the sky however, no tornadoes have been reported touching down in the New York area.
Luckily, there no reports of injuries or major damage in the five boroughs at this time.
