Tomlinson: Jets Would Be 'Good Fit' For Peyton Manning
NEW YORK (WFAN) -- The Jets are reportedly interested in mega free agent Peyton Manning.
But would the future Hall of Famer want to join his little brother Eli in New York?
Jets free-agent-to-be running back LaDainian Tomlinson says it'd make sense for both sides.
"I do know one thing: This is a good fit for him," Tomlinson told the NFL Network Wednesday. "The Jets already have a very good offensive line, a good receiving corps, obviously headed by Santonio Holmes, Dustin Keller at tight end. This is a team that, offensively, they run the ball really well. This is a team that if they get Peyton Manning, that division it could be scary."
The longtime Colts quarterback was released from Indianapolis on Wednesday.
The Jets have called Manning's representatives to inquire about his interest in the team, according to multiple reports. Miami, Kansas City, Arizona, Seattle and Denver are also reportedly interested in the four-time NFL MVP.
"I think the players want to win," Tomlinson said. "With Peyton Manning, his track record says it all. He's won a Super Bowl, he's been a four-time MVP. So his resume tells you right now that this guy's going to be able to come in and we're going to win."
"It's hard to not say that you want a guy like Peyton Manning," he added. "He's one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time."
But how would current quarterback Mark Sanchez handle a demotion? Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum told WFAN's Boomer & Carton last week that the position "as a whole ... has a reasonable chance to look different by opening day."
"In my opinion, I don't know if he'll handle it well," said Tomlinson. "He'll probably go in and maybe ask to be released. Here's Mark Sanchez's gripe: 'I took you guys to two straight AFC Championship games. ... So how can you turn around and just bring in another quarterback?' Rightfully so. He will be a little mad, that's all a part of it."
A source told the New York Daily News that the Jets should just "let him watch."
"I wouldn't do anything with Sanchez," said the insider. "By osmosis he will get better. He is no longer my priority. My priority is to win a championship. Manning gives me the best chance. An opportunity like this comes along once in a great while. You can't afford to pass it. I'm not talking about a Band-Aid here. This guy can keep the train moving for a few years."
