Jets' Reilly On Coughlin's Decision To Go For It: 'It Was Stupid, So Stupid'
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Tom Coughlin is hearing it on Monday.
He's hearing it from writers. He's hearing it from fans. He's hearing it from sports-talk radio hosts and television analysts.
He's even hearing it from opposing players.
With the Giants leading the Jets, 20-10, on Sunday at MetLife Stadium and 8:50 remaining in the game, Coughlin decided to go for it on fourth-and-2 from the Jets' 4-yard line.
Instead of kicking the field goal and taking the points, quarterback Eli Manning was intercepted by Jets backup safety Rontez Miles.
"It was stupid, so stupid," Jets linebacker Trevor Reilly said of the play call, according to the New York Post. "You kick the field goal there. I mean, you're winning by 10 points in the fourth quarter. If they kick the field goal we're down two touchdowns. When they went for it we were like, 'Shoot, we got it now.'"
The Jets subsequently hit a field goal to make it a one-possession game, and then Brandon Marshall hauled in a nine-yard touchdown pass from Ryan Fitzpatrick with 27 seconds remaining.
The Jets won the game in overtime when kicker Josh Brown missed a 48-yard field-goal attempt.
Coughlin defended his decision to go for it on fourth down after the game.
The Giants are now 5-7 and in serious danger of missing the playoffs for the fourth straight season.
