Report: Tom Coughlin Interviewing With 49ers
SAN FRANCISCO (CBSNewYork) -- Tom Coughlin is reportedly interviewing Tuesday with the San Francisco 49ers for their head coaching job.
It's the second known interview for the 69-year-old former Giants coach, who resigned last week after 12 seasons in New York. Coughlin also met with the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday.
Multiple reports have said San Francisco requested permission from the Giants to speak with Coughlin, who still has one year remaining on his contract. NFL.com reported that the interview was taking place Tuesday.
The 49ers are in the market for a coach after firing Jim Tomsula after going 5-11 in his only season as head coach.
Coughlin and San Francisco general manager Trent Baalke both have ties to Bill Parcells. Baalke worked as a scout under Parcells with the Jets from 1998-2000. Coughlin served as Parcells' wide receivers coach with the Giants from 1988-90.
Giants co-owner John Mara said last week that Coughlin agreed to help the organization in some capacity. But Coughlin also indicated his preference was to continue coaching.
"I'm not necessarily done with coaching," the two-time Super Bowl champ told reporters.
Coughlin has a 170-150 record in 20 years as an NFL coach, with the Giants and Jacksonville Jaguars. He ranks 12th all-time in coaching wins. While his teams in New York did upset the Patriots twice in the Super Bowl, they failed to reach the postseason each of the past four seasons.
Meanwhile, the Giants have interviewed six candidates for their vacancy: their own offensive and defensive coordinators, Ben McAdoo and Steve Spagnuolo; former Bills coach Doug Marrone; Lions defensive coordinator Teryl Austin; former Falcons coach Mike Smith; and Bears offensive coordinator Adam Gase, who was hired as the Dolphins' new coach last weekend.
New York also has requested permission to interview Bengals offensive coordinator and former Raiders coach Hue Jackson. Jackson is also a candidate for the 49ers job.
