Tigers' Quintin Berry On Yankee Stadium: 'This Is A Very Easy Place To Play Now'
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - There has just been something missing in the Bronx this postseason.
Yes, we all know that the bats have been lifeless for the Yankees, as the Bombers have only scored four runs in two devastating home losses to the Tigers to begin the American League Championship Series.
Game 2 of the ALCS had thousands of empty seats, as did Game 1 and, the day before that, the deciding Game 5 of the American League Division Series.
Thousands of empty seats at Yankee Stadium? In the postseason, no less?
It's unheard of, especially considering that the Yankees would routinely sell out every single regular-season home game at the old Yankee Stadium. Every other postseason city has had its stadium filled for games this month, while Yankee Stadium has entire sections of the park empty. Some tickets through resellers have even gone for as low as $15.
You can sense that the fans in attendance are dying to explode for a home run or a four-run rally, but the mighty Yankees are giving them nothing.
What was once the greatest home-field advantage in baseball has been reduced to an antsy, angry crowd that resents its team.
It hasn't gone unnoticed, even to opposing players.
"This is a very easy place to play now," said Tigers outfielder Quintin Berry, according to Yahoo! Sports. "Coming from Oakland, the fans there were so rowdy. It was easier to come here."
Seemingly more Yankees hitters are getting booed than aren't. There is the usual suspect -- Alex Rodriguez, who is 3-for-23 this postseason -- and then there are newcomers, such as Nick Swisher (4-for-26), Curtis Granderson (3-for-26) and Robinson Cano, who is hitless in his last 27 at-bats.
Will the Yankees have a chance to redeem themselves to their fans at their home stadium again this season? They'll have to win at least two of the next three games at Comerica Park to get that opportunity.
And the way New York is going right now, that doesn't seem very likely.
"Our fans haven't had much to cheer about, so you can't blame them," Rodriguez said. "You've got to blame us. If I was sitting there, I'd be perplexed too. We didn't score any runs. What the hell are you going to cheer about?"
