Theodore Roosevelt's Sagamore Hill Closing Soon For Years Of Work
COVE NECK, NY (WCBS 880) - Sagamore Hill, the 125-year-old Long Island home of late former President Theodore Roosevelt, is getting some much-needed fixing.

"The Roosevelt home is being closed for a $6.2 million rehabilitation, which is really a soup to nuts rehabilitation from the roof down to the basement," said site superintendent Thomas Ross, who calls it a meticulous upgrade. "We have the original plans. So, using those plans to be able to bring back some of the restored features, such as rehabilitating that rear porch, putting in that central skylight."
It will require the closure of the home for three years.
"The home has over six thousand books and another six thousand objects which all have to be very carefully packed and taken out of the home," Ross told WCBS 880 Long Island Bureau Chief Mike Xirinachs.
The grounds of the popular tourist attraction will remain open during the renovation, which when completed, Ross says would make Teddy proud.
"If he did step into the home, that he would say 'I remember this home,'" Ross said.
The last day for tours will be December 4, 2011.
