The Show Must Go On: NYC Public Schools Reopen Wednesday; Broadway Performances Back On Tuesday Evening
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- The show(s) must go on!
Mayor Bill de Blasio announced Tuesday that New York City public schools will reopen on Wednesday, a day after a blizzard forecast left NYC with far less snow than predicted, and despite his son Dante's efforts to convince him they should be closed.
Saying, "we dodged a bullet," de Blasio told reporters, "2010 was clearly in my thoughts, NYC was unprepared, unclear about danger."
The city virtually closed down Monday night with all mass transit shutting down at 11 p.m., as well as a travel ban on all non-emergency vehicles.
Subway service resumed Tuesday, and all travel bans were lifted.
Mayor Bill de Blasio urged New Yorkers to be careful when venturing out.
"It's still going to be slippery, if you're walking around and you're driving it's going to be slow going until sanitation fully gets to do its work," de Blasio told CBS2's Diane Macedo. "People should take precautions, it does not mean let's go and be rush-rush. You know, take it easy, be careful, but things will get back to normal."
Meanwhile, most Broadway theaters reopened Tuesday, a day after a heavy snow forced the closure of some shows Monday night.
The Broadway League said all current plays and musicals will be open as scheduled on Tuesday with the exception of "Aladdin" and "The Lion King.''
"Most shows will go on as scheduled tonight," said Charlotte St. Martin, Executive Director of The Broadway League. "For those who are staying in hotels and can't get home, it's a great time to see a show. As always, the safety and security of theatre-goers and employees is everyone's primary concern, so those who can't get in to the city should contact their point of purchase for questions about exchange or refund policies."
The last time Broadway took a big hit from the weather it was Hurricane Sandy in 2012. That storm darkened Broadway for four days and cost more than $8.5 million in lost revenue.
Other venues also shuttered. Two open rehearsals by the New York Philharmonic were scrapped for Wednesday. And Louis C.K.'s show at Madison Square Garden was canceled for Wednesday.
