There are a few things that come to mind when people think of New York, and overstuffed pastrami sandwiches should be one of them.  Unfortunately, most people don't think of going to Queens for one, and that's a shame: Ben's Best has some of the best pastrami around, and is located on the same block as the train station.  Like biting into a delicious, savory cloud, the pastrami is so tender when eaten with your fingers (because who has time for a fork when you have a big steaming pile of pastrami in front of you?), you'll find it hard to believe that you ever went elsewhere for your pastrami fix.  Add a schmear of mustard to the bread, and you have what amounts to a plate of heaven. The corned beef, made in-house like the pastrami, is also wonderfully tender, but once you have the pastrami, you won't think of anything else.

The Sandwich Kings of Astoria, Sal, Kris & Charlie's owns bragging rights for amazing sandwiches. Ginormous sandwiches for less than $10, each one is handcrafted with care and explodes in your mouth with flavor. Try the Bomb - a sesame hero cresting 13" with salami, pepperoni, roast beef, ham, turkey, pastrami, mortadella, chicken, American & provolone cheeses, and of course some 'veggies' thrown in for good measure - impress someone by eating an entire one in one sitting, but have a pillow handy for the food coma you'll enter immediately after finishing.

Ragtime Gourmet is the quintessential Italian grocery: shelves crammed with Italian goodies that might be hard to find in a regular store are stacked in abundance everywhere. Those in the know head straight to the deli counter in the back, because that's where you'll find some of the best sandwiches. If they have it in the case, they'll make it for you; try the roast beef with fresh mozzarella, roasted red peppers and Balsamic vinegar (pictured); piled high with meat (enough for a second sandwich, if you wanted to take some off!), deliciously soft, fresh mozzarella... you'll lose yourself in this sandwich.

Sandwiches with seemingly randomly chosen names populate the menu at Cherry Valley Deli - which is definitely a deli and not a restaurant - such that ordering can sound like a mishmash of secret language. Fatboys, Bombs, Bushman, Beasts... just a small sample of the sandwiches available at Cherry Valley. Try the Bomb - grilled steak, bacon, cheddar, onion rings and brown gravy on a toasted garlic hero - a surefire way to guarantee a good nap when you're done.

If you haven't already figured out that sometimes, a grocery store isn't just a grocery store, well, this may be the time to go on faith and check out Sorriso. Inside, you'll find a standard Italian grocery store, along with a deli counter that has plenty of antipasto options; marinated mushroom salad, octopus salad, housemade mozzarella and house-cured sausages... and sandwiches to make your mouth happy. Giant sandwiches for small prices, any one is a good bet - but try the Godfather. You won't be disappointed.
