The first parade was on March 17, 1762, which was fourteen years before the Declaration of Independence was adopted. The route has moved from lower Manhattan to farther north on the island, but the spirit is still the same. Revelers wear lots of green and some sport shamrock hats and accessories to show their Irish pride. Get there early in the morning to secure a choice spot at the front along the parade route.
